Verner Panton (1926-1998) is widely considered to be one of the worlds most influential 20th-century modern furniture, lighting and interior designers. Verner Panton was born in Denmark but eventually settled in Switzerland where he met his wife. During his career, he created some of the most innovative and futuristic space age designs in a variety of materials, especially plastic. His most dazzling and rather trippy exposition took place on a boat in Germany. Visitors where greeted by comforting and inviting womb-shaped caves, communal spaces, inviting curved furniture and air that was specially scented. Verner Panton created many icons of modern design. His most notable fine example is the Panton Chair, the first cantilevered chair made from a single piece of plastic. The fluid organic shape of his creations was usually matched to very warm vibrant colors. Some of the highlights by Verner Panton include the Panton Chair, the Panton VP-Globe, the Panton Fun Lamps and the Panton Living Tower. All of the above are on display at Stardust.

Verner Panton and Space Age Design. Verner Panton was a founding father of what we now call Space Age Design, a sub category of design which was hugely popular in Europe during the late 1960's and early 1970's, but received less recognition in the USA. Space Age Design featured smooth fluid organically shaped forms and the choice of material was often plastic or fiberglass. Other notable Space Age Designers from this period include Eero Aarnio, Eero Saarinen and Irwin & Estelle Laverne to name just a few. As it often happens to artists and designers, Verner Panton's design was forgotten for most of the late 20th century as if it was lost in time. New design trends evolved during the late 1970's and early 1980's including anti-design and Memphis Design which broke entirely with the Space Age Design movement. Like Vincent Van Gogh, there is a silver lining however. One of the turning points was the publication "L'Utopie Du Tout Plastique, 1960 ~ 1973" by Fondation pour l'Architecture in Brussels, Belgium. During the span of several decades, Philippe Decelle together with Diane Hennebert and Pierre Loze established some of the most dazzling collections of Space Age Design. This brought sudden new interest to the genre. In the early 1990's Verner Panton's work was rediscovered by a group of young art dealers in London (Claudio Cottone) and Switzerland (Quadrophenia). An online tribute was established by a young couple of art dealers in New York and Verner Panton received a long overdue recognition for his mark on design history. Ever since, there has been a tremendous resurgence in interest in his work fueled by big ticket price sales at Sotheby's, Christies, Phillips de Pury and Wright. Vitra and VerPan re-edited most of his collection which is now available again. Stardust is proud to be the official retailer of Verner Panton design.

When writing about the course of his remarkable 50-year career, George Nelson described a series of creative "zaps"--moments of out-of-the-blue inspiration "when the solitary individual finds he is connected with a reality he never dreamed of."

George Nelson got an early zap in the 1930s, when he was an architectural student in Rome. Before returning home, an idea struck him: He would travel Europe and interview leading modern architects, hoping to get the articles published in the U.S. He succeeded, and in the process introduced the U.S. design community to the European avant-garde. This set in motion a sequence of what he called "lucky" career breaks that were really the inevitable outcomes of his brilliance as a designer, teacher, and author. The first break was being named an editor of Architectural Forum magazine. Working on a story there in 1942, he was looking at aerial photos of blighted cities when--zap!--he developed the concept of the downtown pedestrian mall, which was unveiled in the Saturday Evening Post. Soon after, another zap led to the Storagewall, the first modular storage system and a forerunner of systems furniture. The Storagewall was showcased in a 1945 Life magazine article, causing a sensation in the furniture industry. Herman Miller founder D.J. DePree saw the article and was so impressed that he paid a visit to Nelson in New York and convinced him to be his director of design, which spurred Nelson to found his design firm, George Nelson & Associates. The warm personal and professional relationship between Nelson and DePree yielded a stunning range of products, from the playful Marshmallow Sofa to the first L-shaped desk, a precursor of today's workstation.

George Nelson once wrote that Herman Miller "is not playing follow-the-leader". That's one reason why George Nelson & Associates worked with Herman Miller for over 25 years as they shepherded design into the modern era.

During this same period, George Nelson & Associates also created many landmark designs of products, showrooms, and exhibitions for a variety of companies and organizations. George Nelson said that for a designer to deal creatively with human needs, "he must first make a radical, conscious break with all values he identifies as antihuman." Designers also must constantly be aware of the consequences of their actions on people and society. In fact, he declared that "total design is nothing more or less than a process of relating everything to everything." So he said that rather than specializing, designers must cultivate a broad base of knowledge and understanding. George Nelson did so as few are able, and, with the help of well-timed zaps, he helped define modern, humane design.

Luceplan Metropoli D20/38 Modern Sconce/Ceiling Lamp by Alberto Meda, Paolo Rizzatto & Riccardo Sarf

The Metropoli D20/38 was designed by Alberto Meda, Paolo Rizzatto and Riccardo Sarfatti for Luceplan in Italy. Metropoli, “revolutionary within”. Simple, almost elementary. Elegant, positively impeccable. Each ceiling/wall lamp has a set of interchangeable optics so that incandescent, halogen and fluorescent lights can be used for better visual comfort and lower energy consumption. This technical step forward can also be seen in the ease of assembly and maintenance of this lamp. The wide rear hole allows rapid electrical connection during installation and convenient inspection of the system during operation. The diffuser closure system, of the “watch-case” type, facilitates bulb replacement and cleaning of the reflectors. From interiors to porticoes or gardens, Metropoli can create a pleasant continuity between the interior and exterior of an architecture. The Metropoli wall or ceiling lamp has two versions that are each suitable for either wet locations or damp locations.

Luceplan Solar Bud Modern Outdoor Light by Ross Lovegrove

The Solar Bud outdoor lamp was designed by Ross Lovegrove for Luceplan in Italy. The little light accompanies your footsteps in the dark. SolarBud needs no electric wiring because it is powered by a battery recharged by sunlight. With exactly the right brightness, it picks out paths, tracks, swimming pool edges, doorways etc, that would otherwise be hard to recognize in the dark. The solar energy, collected by a polycrystalline silicon photovoltaic cell, powers two rechargeable nickel cadmium batteries. After sunset, they can yield the energy accumulated from the sun to spontaneously turn on the high efficiency leds. The duration of the light when fully charged is between 13 and 15 hours. The sun exposure time necessary to reload the energy expended after 13 hours of lighting is about 5 hours. It's perfect for the outdoor and works great in wet conditions as well. A modern and efficient design for any outdoor setting, be it a yard, pathway or poolside.

Luceplan Strip D22/4 Modern Wall/Ceiling Lamp by Dante Donegani

The Strip sconce was designed by Dante Donegani for Luceplan in Italy. Strip is a family of wall, ceiling and suspension lamps of very reduced thickness for linear fluorescent tubes, designed according to modularity standards allowing sequences and juxtapositionings according to geometries “in equilibrium”. Its very few basic elements such as the die-cast aluminum shoulders, the extruded aluminum distancer profiles, the electrical component housings and the opaline polycarbonate diffuser screens, allow modular lighting units of different dimensions and brightness to be created, whose common feature is their flat, low profile very close to the wall. This thickness reduced to the minimum makes Strip particularly suitable for places requiring unobtrusive lighting that adheres as closely as possible to ceilings and walls, for example in corridors and staircases. The Strip sconce is available with two voltages (120V or 277V).
